Metres to Yards Swimming Converter
Convert any swimming distance between metres, yards, kilometres and miles. See the equivalent in all units at once, plus pool length counts.
Why swimming uses two distance systems
Swimming is one of the few sports where the unit of measurement changes depending on where you are. Most of the world follows FINA standards and measures pools in metres — 25 m for short-course, 50 m for long-course (Olympic) swimming. The United States, however, runs its college (NCAA) and high-school seasons in 25 yard pools, and a great deal of American Masters swimming is yards-based too. So the same workout might be "10 × 100" in either system, but the actual distance covered differs by almost 9%.
This converter lets you move freely between metres, yards, kilometres and miles. Enter a value, pick the unit it is in, and you get the equivalent in all four units at once, plus a quick read on how many lengths that is in a standard 25 m or 25 yd pool.
1 metre = 1.09361 yards
1 yard = 0.9144 metres
1 kilometre = 1000 m = 1093.61 yards = 0.621371 miles
1 mile = 1609.34 metres = 1760 yards
The exact maths
The yard is legally defined as exactly 0.9144 metres, which makes every other conversion exact rather than approximate. From that single definition you can derive everything: a metre is 1 ÷ 0.9144 = 1.0936133 yards, a kilometre is 1093.6133 yards or 0.6213712 miles, and a mile is 1760 yards or 1609.344 metres. This calculator uses those exact values, so 1500 m always comes out to 1640.42 yards with no rounding drift.
One common point of confusion: a 25 yard pool is not the same as a 25 metre pool. The yard pool is 22.86 metres long — about 2.14 m shorter per length. Over a 500 yard swim that gap accumulates to roughly 114 m of difference, which is why yard and metre times are never compared directly and why conversion tables exist for race results.
Short-course yards (SCY) pools are 25 yd (22.86 m). Short-course metres (SCM) pools are 25 m. A swim in SCM covers about 2.14 m more water per length than SCY, but SCY gets one extra turn over 100 m, and turns are where a lot of speed is made or lost. The two are genuinely different events — that is why records, cuts and qualifying times are kept separately and converted with sport-specific factors rather than a pure metres-to-yards ratio.

Converting pace, not just distance
Converting a distance is straightforward. Converting a pace takes a little care, because pace is time-per-distance and the distance part changes. A pace of 1:30 per 100 metres is slower numerically when expressed per 100 yards: because 100 yards is only 91.44 m, you cover it in less time, so the per-100-yard pace is 1:30 × (100 ÷ 91.44) ≈ 1:38. The rule of thumb: to go from per-100-m to per-100-yd, multiply by 1.09361; to go the other way, divide by 1.09361 (equivalently multiply by 0.9144).
If you need to convert a pace rather than a distance, use the swimming pace calculator — it reports both per-100 m and per-100 yd from the same swim. For working out how many lengths your distance adds up to, the pool length calculator handles 25 m, 25 yd, 50 m and custom pool sizes. The full unit reference lives in the swimming units guide.
When miles and kilometres matter
Metres and yards dominate pool swimming, but kilometres and miles matter as soon as you leave the pool. Open-water events are billed in kilometres (1.5 km, 5 km, 10 km) and triathlon swims are quoted in metres, but many athletes think in miles for cross-training comparisons. A 2 mile open-water swim is 3.219 km or 3520 yards; a 5 km race is 3.107 miles. This converter collapses all four units into one result so you never have to do the arithmetic in your head.
For estimating how long a given distance will take you, pair this converter with the distance calculator and the pace calculator — convert the distance first, then feed it into a pace-based time estimate.

Metres to Yards Swimming Converter FAQ
100 metres equals 109.36 yards. The exact conversion is 1 metre = 1.09361 yards, so 100 × 1.09361 = 109.361 yards. This is why a 100 m race is about 9 yards longer than a 100 yard race, and why you cannot compare the two times directly without a conversion factor.
Most of the world uses metres, following FINA international standards, with 25 m short-course and 50 m long-course pools. The United States historically uses yards for college (NCAA) and high-school swimming, with 25 yard short-course pools. As a result swimmers regularly move between the two systems and need to convert distances, and sometimes times, between metres and yards.
Short-course yards (SCY) pools are 25 yards long; short-course metres (SCM) pools are 25 metres long. A 25 m pool is about 2.34 metres (2.56 yards) longer per length than a 25 yard pool, so a 100 m swim has one extra turn in SCY and covers slightly less water per length. Times are not directly comparable and are converted using recognised factors rather than a pure distance ratio.
You do not convert the time directly — you convert the distance, then recompute the pace. To turn a pace per 100 metres into a pace per 100 yards, multiply by 1.09361, because 100 yards is shorter than 100 metres and you cover it in less time. For example, 1:30 per 100 m becomes about 1:38 per 100 yd. This converter handles the distance conversion; use the pace calculator for time and pace conversions.
