Lengths vs laps: getting the terms right

In swimming, a length is one way across the pool — from one wall to the other. A lap is there and back, which equals two lengths. So in a 25 m pool, one length is 25 m and one lap is 50 m.

This distinction matters because the two terms are used inconsistently. Some swimmers, coaches and even fitness apps say "lap" when they mean a single one-way trip, which causes confusion when comparing distances. To stay unambiguous, this calculator counts lengths — one-way trips — and multiplies by the pool length to get total distance. If you think in laps, just double the number before entering it.

The pool distance formula

distance = lengths × pool length

For 60 lengths of a 25 m pool: 60 × 25 = 1500 m (1.5 km, ~0.93 miles).

Common pool sizes

Pools come in a handful of standard sizes. Knowing yours is essential for accurate distance tracking:

  • 25 m — the global standard for short-course pools. 64 lengths = 1600 m (a pool mile); 66 lengths = 1650 m (the competitive mile).
  • 50 m — Olympic or long-course pools. 32 lengths = 1600 m; 33 lengths = 1650 m. Each length is twice as far as in a 25 m pool.
  • 25 yd — the standard in the United States for short-course yards swimming. 66 lengths = 1650 yd (the US competitive mile).
  • 33⅓ m — an older one-third-of-a-hectometre length, now rare but still found in some legacy pools. 3 lengths = 100 m.
  • 20 m / 33 m — smaller teaching or leisure pools. Always check the signage or ask the lifeguard if you are unsure.

Why tracking distance from lengths matters

If you swim without a GPS watch or lap counter, counting lengths is the simplest way to track how far you have gone. But once you have that number, you need to convert it to a meaningful distance — and that depends entirely on the pool size. Sixty lengths in a 25 m pool is 1500 m; the same 60 lengths in a 50 m pool is 3000 m, exactly double. Getting the pool length wrong is the single most common source of inflated (or deflated) swim logs.

This is also why you cannot directly compare yardage swum in a 25 yd pool with metres swum in a 25 m pool. A 25 yd pool is 22.86 m long, so 100 lengths there is 2286 m, not 2500 m. The calculator handles this conversion for you: enter yards as the pool unit and it reports the distance in metres, yards, kilometres and miles simultaneously. For pure unit conversions, use the metres to yards converter.

Check your pool before you log

Before you trust a distance calculation, confirm the actual pool length. Many leisure centres have a 25 m main pool but a smaller teaching pool alongside it. Some 50 m pools are split into two 25 m sections with a boom. If your tracker says you swam far more or less than expected, the pool length setting is the first thing to check.

Useful length milestones

Here are some common targets in a 25 m pool, to give you a sense of scale:

  • 40 lengths = 1000 m (1 km) — a solid fitness swim.
  • 60 lengths = 1500 m — the Olympic triathlon swim and a classic distance target.
  • 64 lengths = 1600 m — a pool "mile."
  • 66 lengths = 1650 m — the competitive mile distance.
  • 80 lengths = 2000 m (2 km) — a longer endurance session.

Once you know your total distance, you can turn it into a pace with the pace calculator, estimate how long it should take with the distance calculator, or understand the unit conversions in depth with the swimming units guide.

Pool Length Calculator FAQ

A mile is 1609.34 metres, which is approximately 64.4 lengths of a 25 m pool. In practice, swimmers often round to 64 lengths for a pool mile (1600 m) or 66 lengths (1650 m) to match the competitive mile distance. The calculator above gives you the exact distance for any number of lengths and any pool size.

A length is one way across the pool, from one end to the other. A lap is there and back, equal to two lengths. In a 25 m pool, one length is 25 m and one lap is 50 m. Some swimmers and regions use the terms interchangeably, which causes confusion, so the calculator counts lengths (one-way trips) and lets you convert to total distance unambiguously.

60 lengths of a 25 m pool is 1500 metres, or 1.5 kilometres. That is the standard Olympic triathlon swim distance and a common target for fitness swimmers. In yards it is approximately 1640 yards, or just over a mile. Enter 60 lengths and a 25 m pool size in the calculator to see all unit conversions.

One yard equals 0.9144 metres, and one metre equals 1.09361 yards. A 25 yd pool is 22.86 m long. The calculator handles the conversion automatically when you select yards as the pool unit, showing your total distance in metres, yards, kilometres and miles. For standalone distance conversions, use the metres to yards converter.
